AG Carinae: a Luminous Blue Variable with a high rotational velocity
نویسنده
چکیده
We report the detection of broad absorptions due to Si IV λλ4088–4116 in the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) AG Carinae during its last hot phase (2001-2003). Our NLTE spectral analysis, with the radiative transfer code CMFGEN, revealed the photospheric nature of these lines predicting, however, much narrower and deeper absorption profiles than observed. Using a recently-developed code to compute synthetic spectra in 2D geometry allowing for the effects of rotation, we could match the broad absorptions with a high projected rotational velocity of 190 ± 30 km s on 2001 April. Analysis of spectra obtained on 2002 March and 2003 January, when the star was cooling, yielded to a projected rotational velocity of 110± 10 km s and 85± 10 km s, respectively. The derived rotational velocities are proportional to R ⋆ , as expected from angular momentum conservation. We discuss the effects of such high rotation on the spectral analysis of AG Car, and on the wind terminal velocity. Our results show direct spectroscopic evidence, for the first time, that a LBV may rotate at a significant fraction of its break-up velocity. Thus, AG Car (and possibly other LBVs) is indeed close to the ΓΩ limit, as predicted by theoretical studies of LBVs. Bona-fide, Strong-variable Galactic Luminous Blue Variable Stars Are Fast Rotators: Detection of a High Rotational Velocity in Hr Carinae
We report optical observations of the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) HR Carinae which show that the star has reached a visual minimum phase in 2009. More importantly, we detected absorptions due to Si IV λλ4088–4116. To match their observed line profiles from 2009 May, a high rotational velocity of vrot ≃ 150± 20 km s −1 is needed (assuming an inclination angle of 30), implying that HR Car rotate...
متن کاملDirect measurement of the size and shape of the present - day stellar wind of η Carinae ?
We present new high angular resolution observations at near-IR wavelengths of the core of the Luminous Blue Variable η Carinae, using NAOS-CONICA at the VLT and VINCI at the VLT Interferometer (VLTI). The latter observations provide spatial information on a scale of 5 milli-arcsec or ∼11 AU at the distance of η Carinae. The present-day stellar wind of ηCarinae is resolved on a scale of several ...
متن کاملHigh velocity structures in , and the X - ray emission from the LBV nebula around η Carinae
The Luminous Blue Variable star η Carinae is one of the most massive stars known. It underwent a giant eruption in 1843 in which the Homunculus nebula was created. ROSAT and ASCA data indicate the existence of a hard and a soft X-ray component which appear to be spatially distinct: a softer diffuse shell of the nebula around η Carinae and a harder point-like source centered on the star η Car. A...
متن کاملThe nature of strings in the nebula around η Carinae
η Carinae is one of the most extreme cases of a Luminous Blue Variable star. A bipolar nebula of 17′′ size surrounds the central object. Even further out, a large amount of filamentary material extends to a distance of 30′′ or about 0.3 pc. In this paper we present a detailed kinematic and morphological analysis of some outer filaments in this nebula which we call strings. All strings are extre...
متن کاملRadio evidence of recent mass ejection from η Carinae
The luminous blue variable η Carinae is almost certainly a double star: a hot secondary in an eccentric orbit around a massive primary. Radio observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at a wavelength of 3 cm, covering the period from 1992 to 2002, suggest that at the time of last periastron, 1998.0, material was tidally lifted from the primary star into its equatorial disc.
